Why are my Instagram DMs not sending? 9 causes and fixes

Updated 10 October 2026 - 6 min read

A DM that will not send is usually one of two things: a problem with the app or your connection, which is quick to fix, or Instagram limiting your account, which needs patience. The first job is to work out which. This guide gives you a two-minute check, then goes through each cause and its fix.

The two-minute check

  1. Send a message to a friend who follows you. If that goes through, your account can send, and the problem is with the specific person or message.
  2. Try from a different device or from instagram.com in a browser. If it works there, the problem is the app on your phone.
  3. Look for a notice. "Try again later" or "Action blocked" means Instagram is limiting you.
  4. Open Settings, then Account Status. It lists any feature Instagram has restricted on your account.

What the result tells you

What happensMost likely cause
Fails for everyone, on every deviceYour account is limited, or Instagram is having an outage
Fails on your phone, works in a browserThe app: cache, an old version, or a stuck session
Fails for one person onlyThey blocked you, restricted who can message them, or left Instagram
Fails only for people you do not followTheir message settings, or a limit on your cold DMs
Fails only when the message has a linkThe link is being filtered

1. Instagram is limiting your account

The most common cause for anyone doing outreach. Too many messages too quickly, identical text, or a jump in activity makes Instagram pause your sending. Stop sending completely for at least 24 hours and do not keep testing, because repeated attempts tend to extend the limit. Then resume at a much lower number.

2. The person does not accept messages from you

Everyone can choose who is allowed to message them. Some accounts turn off message requests from people they do not follow, or from everyone. Your message cannot be delivered, and nothing is wrong with your account. Move on to the next lead.

3. They blocked or restricted you

If someone has blocked you, their profile will not load for you and messages will not send. If they restricted you, your messages go to their requests without notifying them. There is nothing to fix here either.

4. The account no longer exists

People deactivate, rename and delete accounts. A lead list that is a few weeks old will always contain some that are gone. This is normal, and the reason to use a list soon after you build it.

5. A link or a word in the message is being filtered

Links in a first message to a stranger are the usual culprit, especially shortened ones. Certain words also trip filters. Send the same message without the link. If that goes through, you have your answer.

6. The app is the problem

  1. Close Instagram fully and reopen it.
  2. Update it from the App Store or Play Store.
  3. On Android, clear the app's cache in your phone settings. On iPhone, delete and reinstall the app.
  4. Log out and back in.

7. Your connection

A weak connection leaves a message stuck on "Sending". Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data and try again. If you use a VPN, turn it off. A VPN can make your login look like it is coming from somewhere unusual, which can itself trigger a limit.

8. Instagram is down

It happens a few times a year. If messages fail for everyone at once and nothing in your settings has changed, check a service-status site or search for reports. Wait it out. Retrying does not help.

9. A tool or app with access to your account

An app that logs in as you can cause Instagram to restrict messaging. Check Settings, then Apps and Websites, and remove anything you do not recognize or no longer use.

How often do sends fail in normal use?

Some failures are simply part of sending to people you do not know. Across 19,663 cold DMs sent through Nousify.ai campaigns since September 2026, 97.4% were delivered. About 2.5% were not accepted by Instagram, mostly for the per-person reasons above: the lead could not receive the message.

  • Delivered97.4%

    19,145 messages

  • Not accepted by Instagram2.5%

    494 messages

  • Timed out or interrupted0.1%

    29 messages

Outcome of 19,663 cold DM sends through Nousify.ai campaigns, 1 September to 10 October 2026.

So a failure here and there is expected. What should worry you is a run of failures in a row, or a failure rate that climbs from a few percent to a third of your messages. That is your account being limited, and the fix is to stop and slow down.

If you use automation

A tool that keeps retrying into a block makes it worse. Nousify.ai records the outcome of every send, skips a lead whose message could not be delivered rather than trying again for hours, and pauses the campaign if Instagram starts refusing several in a row, with a notice explaining why.

Common questions

Why does my Instagram DM say "couldn't send"?
Either the recipient cannot receive your message, because they blocked you, limited who can message them or left Instagram, or your own account is temporarily limited. Message a friend to tell the two apart.
How long does an Instagram DM block last?
Instagram does not publish durations. A first limit commonly lifts within 24 to 48 hours. Repeated ones last longer.
Why can I not message someone who does not follow me?
They may have turned off message requests from people they do not follow. It is their setting, and there is no way around it.
Do links stop Instagram DMs from sending?
They can. A link in a first message to someone you have never spoken to is often filtered. Send the link after they reply.
