Instagram message requests: how to get your DMs seen and accepted
Updated 10 October 2026 - 5 min read
When you message someone who does not follow you, your DM does not arrive in their inbox. It goes to a separate folder called Requests, where it waits until they decide what to do with it. Understanding that folder explains most of what happens to a cold DM, including why a perfectly good message can go unanswered.
Where your message goes
| Place | Who lands there | Does the person get notified? |
|---|---|---|
| Main inbox | People they follow, and anyone whose request they accepted | Yes |
| Requests | People they do not follow | Depends on their settings |
| Hidden requests | Messages Instagram has filtered as possible spam or offensive | No |
Requests is the normal destination for a cold DM, and it is fine. People check it. Hidden requests is the one to stay out of. It sits behind a link at the bottom of the Requests screen, most people never open it, and a message that lands there is close to invisible.
What the other person sees
They can open and read your whole message without accepting it, and you will not know. Read receipts do not work on a pending request, so "seen" never appears until they accept. A request with no reply is not proof that nobody read it.
From the request they have three choices: accept, which moves the conversation into their inbox, delete, or block. They can also simply leave it. Replying counts as accepting.
Why messages end up in hidden requests
Instagram does not publish the rules, but the triggers are consistent with what any spam filter looks for.
- Links in a first message from someone the recipient does not know.
- Words the recipient has added to their own hidden words list, or that Instagram treats as offensive or scam-like.
- The same text sent to many people.
- An account with a history of being reported or restricted.
- A new or empty account with no posts and no profile photo.
- A sudden burst of messages from an account that was quiet.
How to get more requests seen and accepted
- Follow the person before you message them. A new follower shows up in their notifications, and your request arrives from a name they have just seen.
- Leave links out of the first message. Send it after they reply.
- Write a first line that is clearly about them. A request shows a preview, and that preview decides whether it gets opened.
- Make your profile worth a look. Most people tap through to it before answering. A photo, a clear bio and a few posts go a long way.
- Do not send identical messages. Vary each one, at least in the opening.
- Keep your account in good standing. Warm it up, stay inside sensible daily limits, and message people who have a reason to care.
The first step is the one people skip. Nousify.ai campaigns follow each lead and then send the message a few minutes later for exactly this reason: the follow puts your name in front of them first.

How to check your own requests
- Open Instagram and go to your messages.
- Tap Requests at the top right of the inbox.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Hidden requests to see what was filtered.
It is worth doing once a week if you run outreach. Replies from people who do not follow you can land there too.
How to tell if your DMs are being filtered
You cannot see the other person's folders, so you have to read the signs.
- Your reply rate drops sharply with no change to your list or message. In our data the average cold DM reply rate is 9.5%, so a fall to 1% or 2% is a signal.
- Messages that used to send start failing.
- Instagram shows a warning or an action block.
If you see these, stop outreach on that account for a day or two, then come back at a lower daily number with messages that are more varied and have no links.
What happens once they accept
After someone replies, you are in their main inbox and the conversation is an ordinary one. Further messages arrive normally and read receipts work. This is why the first message has one job, which is to earn a reply. Everything else can wait until you are through the door.
Common questions
- Can someone see my message request without accepting it?
- Yes. They can open and read it, and you will not see a read receipt until they accept or reply.
- Why did my DM go to hidden requests?
- Instagram filtered it as possible spam or offensive. Links, copied text sent to many people, flagged words and a new or reported account are the usual causes.
- Do message requests expire?
- Instagram does not publish an expiry for standard requests. In practice an ignored request sits there until the person acts on it, which is why a follow-up a week later can still work.
- Does following someone first help?
- Yes. It puts your name in their notifications before the message arrives, so the request is from someone they have just seen.
